About Our Church
Church History
The African Methodist Episcopal Church, of which we are a part, was founded by Bishop Richard Allen in 1787 in Philadelphia, PA, It is the first established African-American church in America.
St. John A.M.E. Church was organized by Mrs. Carrie Hall and Mrs. Caroline Lee in 1898. The new congregation was a mission of Bethel A.M.E. Church, one of the first African-American churches established in Indianapolis in the early 19th century.
St. John grew quickly and purchased a building on the corner of 17th and Yandes. In 1916, St. John moved to its’ current location at 1669 Columbia Avenue where we continue to serve the community and city.
St. John is an active and vibrant congregation where we are committed to L.O.V.E. (Lean on God, Open to God, Volunteer for God and Evangelize for God.)
